Summary

By age thirteen, I was an alcoholic — anything to numb myself from my world of emotional abuse。

That wasn’t who I wanted to be。

My dreams of adventure and exploration were so far out of reach。 I’d never become Tarzan。 I’d never become Jacques Cousteau。

But I was wrong。

This is my story 。 。 。

From the award-winning author of Dancing with Death comes an epic memoir that will delight fans of The Glass Castle, Wild, and Unbroken, as well as Educated and Can’t Hurt Me。 The thrilling I, Tarzan is a deep journey into the author’s innermost secrets that will have you questioning your own self-understanding and life goals。

What an adventure!Hands up all those who had a dream as a child: to be a train driver, an astronaut, an Olympic athlete, Tarzan。 Yes, most of us。 Now put your hand up if you achieved your childhood dream。 Not so many。 J-P's dream was to be Tarzan, Jacques Cousteau, an adventurer。 His parents were not impressed。 His father wanted him to train as an optician and join the family firm, his mother seems to have been wrapped up in her own dramas with several suicide attempts, and was no support。 So J- What an adventure!Hands up all those who had a dream as a child: to be a train driver, an astronaut, an Olympic athlete, Tarzan。 Yes, most of us。 Now put your hand up if you achieved your childhood dream。 Not so many。 J-P's dream was to be Tarzan, Jacques Cousteau, an adventurer。 His parents were not impressed。 His father wanted him to train as an optician and join the family firm, his mother seems to have been wrapped up in her own dramas with several suicide attempts, and was no support。 So J-P commanded his own dreams, swinging through the trees and holding his breath to dive underwater in the bathtub。 As he grew older, he realized that he was going to have to forge his own path, and after an adolescence of alcoholism and fighting he turns his life around completely, becoming part of an elite fighting force。 This book follows his childhood, adolescence, and early adulthood, and is an inspiring tale of what one person can achieve if they put their mind to it。 I'm also extremely impressed that J-P can write so fluently and emotionally in a language that is not his native tongue。 You would never believe he's not a native English speaker。 Do I recommend this book? Yes。 Will I be reading his other books? Definitely。 I'm fascinated to find out how his life develops。 。。。more

From bullied kid to special commando, from drunk to elite athlete, Jean-Philippe Soule’s I, Tarzan really is the stuff of a boys’ own magazine。Unprepossessing as a kid, bullied and uncared for by his parents, Soulé retreats into a fantasy world of Jacques Cousteau, Saint-Expuéry, and Tarzan。 But, unlike most fantasists, Soule is determined to follow his dreams no matter the obstacles put in his way。 Poor eyesight, serious knee injuries and indifference from his family all fail to stop this deter From bullied kid to special commando, from drunk to elite athlete, Jean-Philippe Soule’s I, Tarzan really is the stuff of a boys’ own magazine。Unprepossessing as a kid, bullied and uncared for by his parents, Soulé retreats into a fantasy world of Jacques Cousteau, Saint-Expuéry, and Tarzan。 But, unlike most fantasists, Soule is determined to follow his dreams no matter the obstacles put in his way。 Poor eyesight, serious knee injuries and indifference from his family all fail to stop this determined man。A well written book, Soule’s life story reads like a novel and is totally absorbing and ‘unputdownable’。 I’ve previously read his excellent Dancing with Death which follows his three year canoe expedition to Central America。 This book explains a little of the mindset which allowed that expedition to take place。 Soulé’s life is one many people dream about, yet Soulé wasn’t handed this life, he worked for it, fought for it and sacrificed for it。 As he says “Life dreams aren’t fantasies for the imagination; they are real goals to pursue。” Maybe this book will encourage someone to pursue their own life dreams。 。。。more

This is an inspirational biography about determination to follow a dream and not letting naysayers and experiencing failures stop you, but instead always picking yourself back up each time life knocks you down。 But it is not a “preachy’ book, rather a gripping, fast-moving account that will make you grimace, smile, laugh, and also marvel at the feats of endurance Jean - Philippe went through, and it will make you realise anything is possible。。 The author started life being bullied and with a lac This is an inspirational biography about determination to follow a dream and not letting naysayers and experiencing failures stop you, but instead always picking yourself back up each time life knocks you down。 But it is not a “preachy’ book, rather a gripping, fast-moving account that will make you grimace, smile, laugh, and also marvel at the feats of endurance Jean - Philippe went through, and it will make you realise anything is possible。。 The author started life being bullied and with a lack of parental support。 He gets little encouragement and many put downs for his wish to become an explorer。 Turning to fighting and alcohol, it could have ended badly but inspired by some of his teachers, he channels his energy into achieving his goals。 Despite numerous challenges and setbacks, he always refuses to give up。 If you maybe feel that you can’t do something that you want to, read this。 。。。more

A Captivating Story of Becoming。I was an advanced reader of Jean-Philippe Soule’s latest book, I, Tarzan: Against All Odds, and it is a fast-paced coming-of-age story that can be distilled down to learning to play the hand life deals you and going all-in to achieve your dreams。 It’s a story that offers insights from the different phases of Mr。 Soule’s remarkable life that are as applicable to daily life as they are preparing for the battlefield。The story moves from childhood turmoil, down the ro A Captivating Story of Becoming。I was an advanced reader of Jean-Philippe Soule’s latest book, I, Tarzan: Against All Odds, and it is a fast-paced coming-of-age story that can be distilled down to learning to play the hand life deals you and going all-in to achieve your dreams。 It’s a story that offers insights from the different phases of Mr。 Soule’s remarkable life that are as applicable to daily life as they are preparing for the battlefield。The story moves from childhood turmoil, down the road to becoming an elite Mountain Commando, and through his time during the early growth of Microsoft, and his decision to leave the comfortable known for the chance to achieve his dream。I, Tarzan is an audacious, inspiring story about forging your own destiny。 Jean-Philippe Soule’s storytelling is vivid and visceral as he guides us on a journey of his survival and becoming, dreaming, and despite the odds, achieving。 “It is in our toughest moments that we really discover who we are,” and I, Tarzan offers proof that dreams can be made real with courage, a will to succeed, and a leap of faith。 。。。more

I, Tarzan against all odds, is an emotional and riveting memoir proving that dreams do come true and you can achieve anything you want once you set your mind to it。 Jean’s life is faithfully like a roller-coaster filled with challenges, ups, and downs。 He truthfully invited us into his life and skillfully guided us through his journey of discovery。 Jean is a survivor, and I found his story to be worth reading。“I didn’t want my life to be an occasional adventure。 I wanted adventure to be my life。 I, Tarzan against all odds, is an emotional and riveting memoir proving that dreams do come true and you can achieve anything you want once you set your mind to it。 Jean’s life is faithfully like a roller-coaster filled with challenges, ups, and downs。 He truthfully invited us into his life and skillfully guided us through his journey of discovery。 Jean is a survivor, and I found his story to be worth reading。“I didn’t want my life to be an occasional adventure。 I wanted adventure to be my life。”— J-Philippe Soulé (Excerpt from I, Tarzan)Jean proves that even when we are in our darkest times, we can still pick ourselves up。 The literature is well written and easy to follow。 The truthful notion of the biography really eases you into the book, making you feel like Jean is sitting in front of you and telling you about his life。At first, I wanted to see photos and images but then realized the skillful way of writing made it really easy just to draw the events in your head。 I appreciated the details and honesty。I recommend this book to anyone who likes to read a feel-good biography。 。。。more
